The Kumho Tires Grassroots Motorsports $2004 Challenge! The Car ![]()
Senor Frog is a 1994 Saturn SL2. It all started when Bill Bennert asked the SPOCNE e-mail list if anyone would be interested in buying his daily driver to help finance the tow vehicle for his E-Prepared autocross Saturn. Dan Comly was looking for a cheap daily driver anyway, and the purchase price was under $2004. We decided to tune it up for the $2004 Challenge, becoming the first Saturn entered in the annual event ever! Afterward, we will return it to daily driver duty. This pretty much consists of putting a full interior back in, but leaving all of the performance mods in place to keep it fun.

Bill had already done a lot of work on the car before selling it. He got it for practically nothing due to a completely trashed interior. No problem - he had stripped the interior out of his 1997 SL2 race car anyway, so he simply transplanted it - leather seats and all - into the 94. (We have since sold the swanky leather seats to put more money back into the budget - they were too slippery for autocross anyway.) The motor had apparently leaked oil from pretty much everywhere it possibly could, leading to Bill pulling out the motor and replacing of all the gaskets. We did have to replace the valve cover gasket, which was leaking oil all over one of the spark plugs, but that was the only mechanical issue with the car. Many other cast-off parts from the race car found their way into this one, as well, including the factory CD player (also sold). Cosmetically, it had some dings and scratches, but we've worked on that, too. All in all, the 10 year old car with over 150,000 miles is definitely catching its second wind! Why the name Senor Frog? The keyring that Bill gave Dan when he bought the car had a fob from Senor Frog's on it. The name just sort of stuck, regardless of the fact that the car isn't particularly frog colored. |
